Does the Color of My Atlanta Roof Affect My Power Bill?
Well the short answer is yes and no. Yes the color of the roof does have an affect on your energy bill and no because the affect is so negligible that a homeowner will never notice. While this is a good thought to have, it just doesn’t make sense most of the time. Some are enticed by tax credits and being green but ultimately you’ll burn more green.
There are better ways to save money on energy cost.
A lighter colored roof will only save you pennies a month on your energy bill compared to a darker colored roof. Most Atlanta roofing contractors will talk you out of a lighter colored roof because it isn’t the best looking overtime. Plus, if you are concerned about energy cost, the heat from the roof doesn’t translate into heat in your attic and therefore your home. Excessive heat in your attic is a ventilation problem and not a roof color problem.
First heat transferred into your home from the attic has two main issues, not enough insulation and improper attic ventilation. Focus on those issues, if saving on your energy bill is your main goal. Installing some ridge vents may help.
Replacing a Roof solely to save money is not wise.
Replacing an Atlanta roof to save money is idiotic. Roof cost on average about nine thousand dollars. With pennies in savings each month, it will take thousands of years to recoup the money spent. Neither you nor the roof will last that long. Any tax credit isn’t going to come close to covering that amount. Light colored roofs show age and fatigue more quickly. However, asphalt shingle manufacturers now have better, more common place color choices that are more aesthetically pleasing.
Now I know going green is all the rage day, but throwing away green to be green isn’t smart. Still, if your roof has been damaged and the insurance company is replacing it that would be a good time to put a lighter colored roof. Or if you are building a new home that would also be a good time.
